In Uganda
Over 2 million children in Uganda have become orphans with 420,000 having lost their mothers and 1,330,000 having lost their fathers. Approximately 402,500 children have lost both parents.
About 12% of children in Uganda are orphans, with some estimates suggesting that 1 in 5 children is vulnerable.
Causes of Orphanhood
AIDS: Many children have lost parents to the epidemic, with over 1 million children having lost one or both parents to AIS.
Poverty: Financial difficulties and lack of resources contribute to the high number of orphans.
Conflict and Displacement: Wars and refugee displacement have also led to a significant number of orphans.
Many orphaned children live in orphanages, with approximately 50,000 children currently residing in these institutions. However, community-based care is considered a more cost-effective and sustainable solution
Challenges
Malnutrition: High rates of malnutrition, with 53% of children under 5 suffering from anemia
Limited Access to Education: 1 in 5 children is uneducated, with many unable to access education due to poverty and lack of resources.
Violence an Exploitation: Many orphaned children are vulnerable to violence and exploitation
